When Edmond Dantès is betrayed by his shipmates and imprisoned without trial in the sinister Château d'If, it seems almost certain he will die in chains. But years later, Paris is intrigued by the emergence of the mysterious Count of Monte Cristo, who burst onto the social scene with his millions. He soon encounters the three principle betrayers of Dantès who have prospered in the post-Napoleonic boom and, one by one, their lives fall apart. The ultimate tale of vengeance and retribution, *The count of Monte Cristo* was a huge success when it was first serialized in 1844 and remains a gripping story of hope and revenge. This sensitively abridged Macmillian Collector's Library edition features an afterword by Marcus Clapham.
