"The Mexican village of San Patricio is being menaced by a bizarre, cultish drug cartel infamous for its brutality. As the townspeople try to defend themselves by forming a vigilante group, the Mexican army and police have their own ways of fighting back. Riordan's fellow expatriate Lisette Moreno serves the region in a different way, as a doctor who makes "house calls" to impoverished settlements, advocating modern medicine to a traditional society wary of outsiders. To gain acceptance, she must keep secret her rocky love affair with artist Pamela Childress, whose troubled emotions lead Moreno to question their relationship. Together, Lisette and Riordan tend to their community. But when Riordan oversteps the bounds of his position, his personal crisis echoes the impossible choices facing a nation beset by instability and bloodshed."--Amazon.com

Law & Disorder
April 25, 2017
"Nineteenth-century New York City was one of the most magnificent cities in the world, but also one of the most deadly. Without any real law enforcement for almost 200 years, the city was a lawless place where the crime rate was triple what it is today and the murder rate was five or six times as high. The staggering amount of crime threatened to topple a city that was experiencing meteoric growth and striving to become one of the most spectacular in America. For the first time, award-winning historian Bruce Chadwick examines how rampant violence led to the founding of the first professional police force in New York City. Chadwick brings readers into the bloody and violent city, where race relations and an influx of immigrants boiled over into riots, street gangs roved through town with abandon, and thousands of bars, prostitutes, and gambling emporiums clogged the streets. The drive to establish law and order and protect the city involved some of New York's biggest personalities, including mayor Fernando Wood, police chief Fred Tallmadge, and journalist Walt Whitman. Law and Disorder is a must read for fans of New York history and those interested in how the first police force, untrained and untested, battled to maintain law and order"--
Memoirs of a Watch Salesman

Memoirs of a Watch Salesman: A New York Real Estate Story is the remarkable journey of Joseph Aquino, who went from hustling housewares and watches on the streets of Brooklyn to becoming one of New York’s most respected dealmakers in luxury real estate. With candor, humor, and an insider’s eye, Aquino takes readers behind the velvet ropes of Manhattan’s most iconic properties and into the boardrooms where billion-dollar decisions are made. He recounts the relentless hustle of his early days, the lessons learned managing health clubs, and the four decades spent brokering deals for global luxury brands, financial institutions, and property owners. Along the way, he shares vivid stories of negotiating with Cartier for its Fifth Avenue mansion, shaping Times Square’s 42nd Street Development Project, and building a 26-year partnership with the legendary Faith Hope Consolo. Aquino also writes about attending Financial Times Luxury Summits around the world—London, Rome, Vienna, Marrakech, Singapore, and more—where conversations with CEOs, designers, and financiers turned into real-world transactions. At once a street-smart sales manual and a love letter to New York City, Memoirs of a Watch Salesman is a fast-paced story of resilience, relationships, and the art of closing deals.

January 1, 2020
Aalto University hosted the 2nd edition of the International Seminar on Safety and Security of Autonomous Vessels (ISSAV) together with the 7th edition of the European STAMP Workshop and Conference (ESWC). ISSAV promotes all aspects of maritime safety and security in the context of autonomous vessels. The seminar focuses on exchanging knowledge about key safety and security challenges and opportunities in the context of autonomous vessels and the autonomous maritime ecosystem. The ESWC focuses on applications and studies related to the Systems-Theoretic Accident Model and Processes (STAMP) which is a relatively new systems-thinking approach to engineering safer systems. The 2nd edition of the International Seminar on Safety and Security of Autonomous Vessels (ISSAV) and the 7th edition of the European STAMP Workshop and Conference (ESWC) took place 17-20 September 2019 in Helsinki, Finland. Scope – ISSAV Autonomous vessels have become a topic of high interest for the maritime transport industry. Recent progress in the development of technologies enabling autonomous systems has fostered the idea that autonomous vessels will soon be a reality. However, before the first autonomous vessel can be released into her actual context of operation, it is necessary to ensure that it is safe and secure. The aim of ISSAV is to promote all aspects of maritime safety and security in the context of autonomous vessels. The seminar focuses on exchanging knowledge about key safety and security challenges and opportunities in the context of autonomous vessels and the autonomous maritime ecosystem. The seminar has a special emphasis on: The challenges in managing safety and security in the operation of autonomous vessels and the entire ecosystem of an autonomous maritime system Innovative approaches for managing the safety of autonomous vessels, supporting the design, operations and managerial strategies for ensuring the safety in the functioning of the autonomous maritime system. Digitalization as technological enabler for efficient safety and security assurance in the context of autonomous shipping Discussion and research on how to standardize safety approaches for autonomous vessels. The development of intelligent security strategies for establishing resilient and robust systems for autonomous vessels Safety and security integration in the operative context of autonomous maritime systems Safety aspects of autonomous shipping in extreme environments Scope – ESWC Traditional system safety approaches are being challenged by the introduction of new technology and the increasing complexity of the systems we design, manufacture and operate. STAMP and its associated tools deal with the complexity of systems and provide systematic ways to analyze and assess existing and conceptual systems proactively or detect and illustrate deficiencies revealed through investigations. ESWC brings together researchers and practitioners who apply, or want to get familiar with, STAMP that is widely used in different sectors such as space, aviation, healthcare, defense, nuclear, railways, infrastructure and automotive. The conference covers the following topics: Experiences using STPA, STPA-Sec, and CAST Introducing STAMP, STPA, and CAST into large organizations Safety-guided and Security-guided design using STPA and STPA-Sec Using STPA to make decisions Accident/loss analyses

Atticus Finch
May 8, 2018
"Who was the real Atticus Finch? The publication of Go Set a Watchman in 2015 forever changed how we think about Atticus Finch. Once seen as a paragon of decency, he was reduced to a small-town racist. How are we to understand this transformation? In Atticus Finch, historian Joseph Crespino draws on exclusive sources to reveal how Harper Lee's father provided the central inspiration for each of her books. A lawyer and newspaperman, A.C. Lee was a principled opponent of mob rule, yet he was also a racial paternalist. Harper Lee created the Atticus of Watchman out of the ambivalence she felt toward white southerners like him. But when a militant segregationist movement arose that mocked his values, she revised the character in To Kill a Mockingbird to defend her father and to remind the South of its best traditions. A story of family and literature amid the upheavals of the twentieth century, Atticus Finch is essential to understanding Harper Lee, her novels, and her times"-- "One of the most famous characters in all of American culture, Atticus Finch has long been regarded as a touchstone of decency and goodness. But that changed with the 2015 publication of Lee's long-hidden manuscript Go Set a Watchman, in which Atticus is portrayed not as the heroic defender of a wrongly accused black man but as a small-town southern racist. Many have tried to piece together the "real" Atticus, and to determine how and why Harper Lee would have created two such seemingly different versions of the same character. The best way to understand Atticus, as the award-winning historian Joseph Crespino explains, is to examine the life of the flesh-and-blood man who inspired him: Harper Lee's father, Amasa Coleman (A.C.) Lee. In Atticus Finch, Crespino has unearthed a variety of new sources that show how Harper Lee's views were formed in tension with her father's, and how she used his example, even while smoothing over its rough edges, to create an enduring icon. From 1929 to 1947 A.C. Lee was the part-owner and sole editor of the lone newspaper in Monroeville, Alabama. On display in Lee's editorials were all the attributes commonly associated with Atticus: integrity, idealism, and a vigorous opposition to political demagoguery, whether that meant mob rule in Alabama or fascism in Hitler's Germany. Yet Lee was also a white southerner of his time and place, and his growing opposition to the New Deal and the emerging civil rights movement informed the character his daughter conceived in Watchman"--
Reiner Schürmann and the Poetics of Politics
January 1, 2018
Reiner Schürmann's thinking is, as he himself would say, "riveted to a monstrous site." It remains focused on and situated between natality and mortality, the ultimate traits that condition human life. This book traces the contours of Schürmann's thinking in his magnum opus Broken Hegemonies in order to uncover the possibility of a politics that resists the hegemonic tendency to posit principles that set the world and our relationships with one another into violent order. The book follows in the footsteps of Oedipus who, in abject recognition of his finitude, stumbles upon the possibility of another politics with the help of his daughters at Colonus. The path toward this other, collaboratively created and thus poetic politics begins with an encounter with Aristotle, a thinker whom Schürmann most frequently read as the founder of hegemonic metaphysics, but whose thinking reveals itself as alive to beginnings in ways that open new possibility for human community. This return to beginnings leads, in turn, to Plotinus, who Schürmann reads as marking the destitution of the ancient hegemony of the Parmenidean principle of the One. By bringing Schürmann's innovative and compelling reading of René Char's poem, The Shark and the Gull, into dialogue with Plotinus we come to encounter the power of symbols to transform reality and open us to new constellations of possible community. In Plotinus, where we expected to encounter an end, we experience a new way of thinking natality in terms of what comes to language in Char as the nuptial. Having thus been awakened to the power of symbols, we are prepared to experience how in Kant being itself comes to expression as plurivocal in a way that reveals just how pathologically delusional it is to attempt to deploy univocal principles in a plurivocal world. This opens us to what Schürmann calls the "singularization to come," a formulation that gestures to a mode of comportment at home in the ravaged site between natality and mortality. This then returns us to Oedipus at Colonus; but not to him alone. Rather, it points to the relationship that emerges for a time between Antigone, Ismene, and Oedipus, as they navigate a way between their exile from Thebes and Oedipus's final resting place near Athens. Here, having been awakened to the power of a poetic politics, we attend to three symbolic moments of touching between Oedipus and his daughters through which we might discern something of the new possibilities a poetic politics opens for us if we settle into the ravaged site that conditions our existence, together.

In this publication, we will explore the subject of false ministers. Jesus said that many would come in His name. As Christians, we need to be able to identify false ministers. Though some may appear like true Christians, the scriptures provide guidelines for their identification. It is our hope that those who lead and are engaged in Christian ministry will boldly expose these false ministers who endeavor to invade the Christian community.
Fracking
January 1, 2018
On the surface, fracking, or hydraulic fracturing, seems like a perfect solution to the countrys energy crises. It is a relatively easy and independent way to supply natural gas. But controversies surround the practice. The process involved in fracking has been shown to be harmful to the environment and a threat to our public health. Do the benefits of fracking outweigh the costs? Can improvements be made to the process that would eliminate its dangers? Should the government get more involved in regulating fracking, or should it be up to the people?
Chollima Korea
January 1, 2017
This account is the result of a trip to the People’s Republic of Korea in early 1971. The author spent a month there on invitation of the North Korean government, to report, as one of the first journalists from the West, on the communist wonderland, already in those days shielded off from the world at large. It was a time when in Europe, as well as in America, diverse Maoist groups believed that they could learn from “the Great Leader and Helmsman Mao” and his small Korean “brother” Kim Il Sung how to counter hunger and squalor in the Third World. In the face of unrestrained capitalist exploitation and the misery in the Third World, it was no wonder that authoritarian youths, and some who were no longer so young, were again looking for Leader figures, who should deliver the world. One of these was Kim Il-Sung. His books were read in the universities in the West and used by communist groups as propaganda material. It was pre-cisely because almost nothing was known about North Korea that his example could work so radiantly in the minds of unknowing paradise searchers. In the time which has gone by, except for a lot of squandered cement and steel, which transformed the façade of the country, while the rest of industry that North Korea once had, is today apparently reduced to missile and atomic armament, the account of the frozen up Leader state, so conserved over the years, has lost none of its relevance.

White Man's Game
July 11, 2017
"The stunningly beautiful Gorongosa National Park, once the crown jewel of Mozambique, was nearly destroyed by decades of civil war. It looked like a perfect place for Western philanthropy: revive the park and tourists would return, a win-win outcome for the environment and the impoverished villagers living in the area. So why did some researchers find the local communities actually getting hungrier, sicker, and poorer as the project went on? And why did efforts to bring back wildlife become far more difficult than expected? In pursuit of answers, Stephanie Hanes takes readers on a vivid safari across southern Africa, from the shark-filled waters off Cape Agulhas to a reserve trying to save endangered wild dogs. She traces the tangled history of Western missionaries, explorers, and do-gooders in Africa, from Stanley and Livingstone to Teddy Roosevelt, from Bono and the Live Aid festivals to Greg Carr, the American benefactor of Gorongosa. And she examines the larger problems that arise when Westerners try to "fix" complex, messy situations in the developing world, acting with best intentions yet potentially overlooking the wishes of the people who live there. Beneath the uplifting stories we tell ourselves about helping Africans, she shows, often lies a dramatic misunderstanding of what the locals actually need and want. A gripping narrative of environmentalists and insurgents, poachers and tycoons, elephants and angry spirits, White Man's Game profoundly challenges the way we think about philanthropy and conservation."--Jacket flap.

21 things you need to know about diabetes and weight loss surgery
January 1, 2017
"According to recent statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 34.9 percent or 78.6 million U.S. adults are obese. In addition, about 17 percent, or 12.7 million U.S. children, between the ages of 2 to 19, are obese. In addition, obesity-related conditions, such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and even some cancers are increasing. These alarming statistics coupled with the exponential growth of medical costs to treat obesity, have created an urgency to find effective treatment options. Weight-loss (bariatric) surgery has become a preferred, and cost-effective, treatment option. This book is an overview of weight loss surgery. Written by Scott A. Cunneen, MD, FACS, the Director of Bariatric Surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angles and leading expert, the book is a concise resource for people with diabetes who are considering weight-loss surgery. Following the American Diabetes Association's 21 Things Series premise and structure, Dr. Cunneen covers all the important questions patients have when facing weight-loss surgery, such as, the types of bariatric surgery, how to prepare for the procedure, what to expect after surgery, establishing new habits and food routines, and managing the patients expectations, "--Amazon.com.

The Identity Quotient

Do you know that an annual procession taken out from the Haigrib Madhab temple in Hajo is incomplete without the participation of some local Muslims? And the fact that the ancestors of the Daullah family of Sivasagar town used to play the negera or drum at the Dols or temples during the reign of the Ahom kings? The indigenous Muslims of Assam are different from rest of the community in the country. Over the years, they have assimilated to the greater Assamese society to such an extent that barring religion, there is not much to differentiate them. The study unravels the journey of this community and looks at how they have contributed significantly to the composite heritage of the state. It profiles achievers in various fields and talks about groups like Deshis, Goriyas, Moriyas, Julhas, and also the Bengali-speaking Muslims of Barak Valley. It also mentions the unique cuisine of Assamese Muslims, actors, singers and writers, the National Register of Citizens (NRC), the controversial citizenship bill, besides how this community, of late, has been suffering the ignominy of being bracketed with illegal immigrants as ‘Miya’ by people who do not know much about it or tend to ignore its contribution.

The democratic faith
January 1, 2017
"Modern political science has concentrated on cataloguing voters' failings--their lack of knowledge, tolerance, or consistency in political thinking. While it would be a mistake to think this portrait of citizens is simply wrong, it is a deeper mistake to accept it as a satisfactory likeness. In this book, Paul Sniderman demonstrates that a concentration on the pathologies of citizens' political thinking has obscured the intense clash of opposing belief systems in the electorate. He shows how a concentration on racism has distorted understanding of the politics of race by keeping out of sight those who think well of black Americans. And he exposes the fallacy of spotlighting the dangers of mass politics while ignoring those of elite politics." -- Provided by the publisher.

Небеса в смятении
January 1, 2022
We All Will Be Received
January 1, 2019
"In 1977, a young woman swipes a duffel bag of drug money and flees her bad-news boyfriend, hitching a ride with a long-haul trucker who points out satellites and enthuses about the future of space cargo. Building a life disconnected from her past, she assumes a new identity as Dawn Taylor, but thirty years later, running a roadside motel on a remote highway, Dawn will host a group of disparate individuals--all desperate to rewrite their own stories. Brody seeks escape from those intent on repeating the narrative of his childhood trauma. Cheryl, whose career as a filmmaker is being dismantled on social media, rushes to rescue her daughter from a vicious cycle. And Spencer, an ex-con with easy access to his criminal past, chases an elusive redemption after seeing a picture of Dawn on a tourism website. In We All Will Be Received, Leslie Vryenhoek offers a range of unforgettable characters--all hoping to reconstruct a truth that's been shattered by perspective--and asks whether anyone can find peace or atonement in a contemporary world where technology makes the past ever present."--Provided by publisher.

The Detroit Printing Co-op
January 1, 2019
Between 1970 and 1980, the Detroit Printing Co-op, spearheaded by Fredy and Lorraine Perlman, was responsible for the first English translation of Guy Debord's Society of the Spectacle, printed journals like SDS' Radical America, ultra-left books by their in-house press, Black & Red, and countless posters, pamphlets, and books printed by high school students, black radicals, labor organizers, and anarchists who made use of the freely available facilities at the Co-op. Fredy Perlman was not a printer or a designer by training, but was deeply engaged in the ideas, issues, processes, and materiality of printing. While at the Detroit Printing Co-op, he rethought the possibilities of prit by experimenting with overprinting, collage techniques, and different kinds of papers. Behind the calls to action and class consciousness written in his publications, there was an innate sense of the politics of design, experimentation, and pride of craft. "The Detroit Printing Co-op" is a timely exploration of the history, output, and legacy of this unique enterprise, and serves as a testament to the power of printing, publishing, design, and distribution.
Romance Phonetics and Phonology
January 1, 2018
This volume explores several recurring topics in Romance phonetics and phonology, with a special focus on the segment, syllable, word, and phrase levels of analysis. An international team of experts and junior researchers present research that ranges from the low-level mechanical processes involved in speech production and perception to high-level representation and computation, based on data from across the Romance language family, including from varieties that are less widely studied.0The book is divided into five parts. In the first, chapters present acoustic studies, examining topics such as Italian anaphonesis and voiceless fricative sibilants in Galician, while chapters in part twoOxford linguistics turn to articulatory studies of features including three-consonant onsets in Romanian and rhotic variation in Tuscan Italian. The focus of the third part is perception, and includes studies of perceived phrasing in French and perceptual cues for individual voice quality, while part four examines phonological issues such as Galician mid-vowel reduction and sibilant voicing in Spanish. Chapters in the final part of the volume look at the effects of production and perception on issues in language acquisition. The book draws on a range of experimental and methodological approaches and will be of interest not only to scholars of Romance linguistics but also to all those working in phonetics and phonology from graduate level upwards.
Inkonfeso
January 1, 2025

THE VISUAL ETHNOGRAPHER'S DATA OTHER: SECRETS UNVEILED FOR A SOCIOLOGICAL J. M. COETZEE
June 26, 2026
Navigating the unseen, the omitted, and the marginalized in visual research. How do the ephemeral, sensory traces of East Asian performance traditions survive their translation into digital data streams? ***THE VISUAL ETHNOGRAPHER'SDATA OTHER:*** *SECRETS UNVEILED FOR A SOCIOLOGICAL J. M. COETZEE* (Eliva Press, June 2026) **『視覚民族誌学者のデータ・アザー:社会学的J・M・クッツェーに向けて明かされる秘密』**(Eliva Press、2026年6月刊行)introduces a rigorous methodological framework for documenting the interstitial spaces where the sensing body, material textiles, and digital platforms collide. Bridging the archival system with the post-colonial narrative of J. M. Coetzee, the monograph interrogates the hidden architectures of the "Data Other"—the unquantifiable human interiority that resists digital capture. By tracking how secrets, ethical boundaries, and sensory absences manifest both in field observation and on the literary page, this work establishes a radical sociological framework for reading text as live cultural data. It is a critical read for researchers working at the intersections of sociological theory, visual cultural studies, and transnational literature.
The Presidency and Social Media
January 1, 2018
The media have long played an important role in the modern political process and the 2016 presidential campaign was no different. From Trump’s tweets and cable-show-call-ins to Sander’s social media machine to Clinton’s "Trump Yourself" app and podcast, journalism, social and digital media, and entertainment media were front-and-center in 2016. Clearly, political media played a dominant and disruptive role in our democratic process. This book helps to explain the role of these media and communication outlets in the 2016 presidential election. This thorough study of how political communication evolved in 2016 examines the disruptive role communication technology played in the 2016 presidential primary campaign and general election and how voters sought and received political information. The Presidency and Social Media includes top scholars from leading research institutions using various research methodologies to generate new understandings―both theoretical and practical―for students, researchers, journalists, and practitioners.
Afterworld (Next Life, #1)
January 1, 2021
Death comes, and misery follows. As a man in his early twenties, Leon never genuinely contemplated what would happen after his death. Like those before him, he never understood the truth of our universe. After his sudden demise, the terrorizing reality of a mysterious dystopian afterlife begins crushing him as it has those prior. Men have started enslaving and killing each other to sate their greed while enigmatic creatures oppress the masses. Only a select few have shown the courage that is needed to challenge their supremacy. Through this eclipsing darkness, there is hope. But will that hope prove to be enough to save this turbulent cosmos? The revelations of advanced science, magic, human savagery, and even our gods will be showcased. Both in a new light and disturbing darkness, will the verities of Earth and Afterworld give Leon a greater understanding of our universe; or in turn, break him as they have done to so many before? Review "This story is complex, with multiple systems of nature to consider and fantastically multifaceted characters. James Robertson has managed to create characters that are reflective of humanity, characters completely devoid of it, and the tricky ones in between. Afterworld is the first in a series (Next Life) and it sets a cracking pace for the ongoing story, with terrific action and some pretty graphic detail. The story incorporates philosophical moral discussion without getting weighed down in argument but instead utilizes the outcomes for the plot - leaving the moralizing to the reader. Fans of dystopian fantasy and sci-fi will have something to love here. Mixing elements from different genres works particularly well in this story and applies a macabre logic to the afterlife created by Robertson. A fast-paced and action-packed dystopic sci-fi fantasy, Afterworld is less of an adventure more of a quest - one you can't help but want to finish." - manybooks.net About the Author James G. Robertson was born in a small town in Kansas. He's also lived in Texas, Missouri, and in New York, where he graduated college from SUNY Oswego in 2019 with a bachelor's in political science and a theatre minor. He has also received an associate's degree in information network technology, which he obtained in 2012 from Pratt Community College. His first book in the Next Life series, Afterworld, was published May 1st, 2020. If you wish to know anything else, feel free to contact him using the contact page on nextlifeuniverse.com
